Please save your long wrapping-paper cardboard tubes for Fern's STEM event! Fern's upcoming STEM festival gratefully welcomes all your long cardboard tubes (e.g. from wrapping paper) for use in our students' marvellous marble-run creations and more. In early January, we'll announce a drop-off point at school where you can deposit your tubes and we'll store them safely till the fun begins. Two of our wonderful Grade 6 students are putting together a gift card drive to help make other people’s holidays a little brighter. If you have a gift card for Tim Hortons, Shoppers Drug Mart, Dollarama, or various grocery stores that you would consider donating, there is a box in the office for collection. Elizabeth and Sen will pick up the donations at the end of the day Friday, December 20 and distribute to local agencies that support low income families in our neighbourhood. Thanks everyone and happy holidays. School Council Exec

SCREENAGERS Documentary - January 23

We are thrilled to present SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age , a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance. After the film, School Psychologist Dr. Paul Szego and Social Worker Sabena Fredric will join us for questions and discussion. January 23rd, 7-8:30pm Fern Auditorium https://www.eventcombo.com/e/screenagers-film-presented-by-fern-avenue-public-school-37004

Thank you Santa and Thank You Willem and Jools!

Thank you to local business (and member of our Fern family) Willem and Jools for its fantastic Meet Santa event Sunday, December 8! Together with the help of Santa (who some say bears a resemblance to Monte Burris of Trust Realty Group), Joanne and the team at Willem and Jools, along with parent volunteers raised $525 for Fern School Council. Special shout out to Fern mum Lindsay Barrowcliffe who was Santa’s photography elf, and her helpers Romina, Patrice, and Julie. Thank you also to Willem and Jools for donating the beautiful Christmas tree in the school’s foyer! The kids will be decorating it with creations from the classroom. Come check it out! Thanks For Another Great Fern Fun Flicks!

Thank you to all the parents and student volunteers for their hard work! Thank you to everyone who donated baked goods, helped with set-up and take down, ran (and tried troubleshooting) the AV equipment, made popcorn, sold pizza and snacks, and every task in between. A special shout out to Bliss, Michael, and Moe for all of their hard work, and a huge thank you to caretakers Diego and Jimmy for helping with set-up and take-down. Lessons learned? Streaming films is not yet the way forward. Thank you all for your patience as we worked out the technical issues, and for your flexibility with the change in plans. Thanks also to Vera for responding to my frantic phone calls, and Ms. Sardella for racing back after hours to help us with the wifi. We’re incredibly fortunate to have staff and administrators who support us in everything we do. All’s well that ends well. The grade 7&8 volunteers were enthusiastic, helpful, and met the popcorn demand (and then some). The new food sale

JR & SR Basketball Cancelled

Dear Parents/Guardians, The practice for the junior and senior boys basketball is cancelled for this morning. Sent on behalf of the Coaches. Thank you!

Congratulations and Thank You!

A huge shout out to the parent volunteers who made Saturday’s first ever Winter Artisan Market and Gear Swap so successful. We never know how it’s going to go when we try something new, and two new events on one day was a risk. However, we had positive feedback all around! We couldn’t have done it without the parents who donated their time, baked goods, and gear. Thank you also to the parents and community members who took part in the market as artisans, or who came to the events as buyers. Great to see the participation of so many school and community members. It’s fantastic to be able to show off Fern to our friends and neighbours. Special thanks to Kim Morrison and her Artisan Market team, Bliss Edwards and the Gear Swap gang, and our principal Ms. Sardella for supporting us. We’re already planning for next time!
