Fern's Communications Committee has prepared a short survey to help us understand the best way(s) to communicate with our current Fern Avenue PS community.  We ask that, if there are multiple people in your home who would like to receive information from Fern Avenue PS, each person completes the survey independently.  We appreciate you taking 5 minutes (maximum) to share your thoughts with us, no later than Sunday, February 4, 2023. Traditionally during Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today. As a country born of colonialism, our equity-deserving communities have had to struggle to access the same rights, freedoms, and privileges that white people experience. As anti-Black racism continues to exist in our society - in our schools, in our playgrounds and in our neighborhoods, we must continue to reinforce the importance of educating ourselves and acting to support structural changes. The month of February is Winter Walk Month with Winter Walk Day on February 1st , 2023 .  Students are encouraged to walk, bike or roll to school during this day, or any day during the month of February. The aim is to celebrate active school travel and to spend time outside in all seasons - especially the cold ones! A brisk walk to school can be exhilarating and fun.  Winter walking tips:  Keep hands and head covered to prevent heat loss  On really cold days wear a scarf over your face and mouth  Wear warm, waterproof boots  Wear a warm coat that deflects the wind  Woolen clothing helps to retain the heat

A student code of conduct refresher assembly will be held on January 31st for all students in grades 1-8. This will be a great opportunity to remind all our students , our school community is built on dignity, kindness and respect for each person that enters our school.

Photos for all grade 8 graduating students will take place on Feb. 2nd in our auditorium. Students are asked to bring their brightest smile!

January 27th is designated by the United Nations General Assembly as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD). Since 2005, the UN and its member states have held commemoration ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism. On this day, all around the world, people of good will gather to remember the victims of the Holocaust and pledge themselves to creating a world that is free of antisemitism, bigotry, hatred and violence.  Fern grade 8 students have been invited to be the live audience at our 5050 Yonge St Board Office for a conversation with Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter. We look forward to this great learning opportunity for our students.

The Equity, Anti-Racism, and Anti-Oppression Department is offering Kindergarten to Grade 6 TDSB students, families, as well as Staff, the opportunity to attend the virtual session, In My Mosque: Love and Belonging in Community Spaces.  Two sessions are available, one for Staff and students; and one for families/guardians/caregivers, on Tuesday, Jan 24, 2023 . Both sessions commemorate the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia. M.O. Yuksel and Hatem Aly, the author and illustrator of the book, In My Mosque, will facilitate an interactive storytelling session focused on love and belonging in community spaces.  The Staff/student session will take place from 12:45 p.m.-1.45 p.m . The full return of sports and athletic teams at schools this year has been such a welcome sight for all. Our students at Fern have been excited to participate in a number of teams, which has brought upon an elevated energy and school spirit with athletics.  In the months of November and December Fern participated with teams in the junior and senior boys volleyball and girls basketball tournaments. Our students enjoyed playing sports, were competitive and had fun. All our teams did well, with our senior girls basketball team winning all their early round games and playing in a closely contested south city final.  As educators and coaches we are so happy for all our students who are active in athletics, developing skills, individual and team, and most importantly having fun with their peers. Fun was also the word most of our students used to describe our senior volleyball house league. As makeup for the cancellation of Pyjama Day on Friday, December 23rd, Student Parliament is inviting all Fern students to wear their pyjamas to school tomorrow, Thursday, January 12th.
