Attention Primary Cross Country Running Team!

Image
Attention Primary Cross Country Running Team: Please click on this link  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WvrGqA9FBmoXeXp9L952w9VoWJ5yQFdrt8OSJJ-XLmA/edit to access a google doc for you to indicate how your child is getting to and from the race on October 13.  We only have 60 spots for runners on the bus and we may need to figure out alternative solutions. Also please sign into your child’s EMA account and go to excursions to fill out the permission form for the race day.  If we do not have this your child cannot participate.  For some reason, EMA did not send out an email telling you the form is there. We have very excited that there will be close to 100 primary students representing Fern on October 13.  You can imagine what a big undertaking this is to organize everyone.  Please help us out by doing these 2 things as soon as possible. Thank you. The Fern Primary CC Running Coaches

Primary Cross Country Running EMA

Dear Parents, If you have not been able to fill out the parent consent form on EMA we are asking you to go into EMA ( https://parent.ema.tdsb.on.ca/#/ ), find your child's grade team (be careful of the number), add your child's name and fill out the medical and the parent consent.  We will have paper copies for those who are unable but let's help Mme Miya's ECO heart and keep as many as possible paperless. Thanks for your patience while we navigate this new process. Kerry Heller

Reminder: First School Meeting -- Tuesday September 26 -- Elections!!

Image
Hello team We've got some spots to fill and we'd love to bring in some new folks. Not to put too fine a point on it, but some of us are going to be moving up and out of Fern Ave P.S. within the next couple of years, so it would be great to have some more folks join us. School Council is an organism that is constantly changing, and we need new folks just as we need institutional memory. We have the following spots up for grabs: Co-chair Treasurer Eng Rep TDSB Ward 7 rep And we are totally open to creating new executive positions if people are super keen. And we need team leads for Arts Collective STEM Committee Right to Read Committee (if there is interest in getting it off the ground) Wellness Committee ... and anything else you'd like to make happen. We are a little less formal than some other School Councils, in that we like to expand the tent as much as possible. So if you want to be involved, but aren't sure what role is available to you, get in touch and we will

We welcome back Brightpics photographers to Fern P.S.  Picture Day for our students from Grades JK to 8 is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept 20th from 9am to 3:30 pm in our auditorium.  Please note that Photo Re-Take Day  and Sibling Photo Day is Oct. 30th.  Bring your smiles!

Orange Shirt Day

Image
Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on Sept . 30th.   Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of the residential schools, and to promote the concept of " Every Child Matter" .  The Orange Shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.   We encourage our staff and students to wear an orange shirt on Friday, Sept. 29th in support of our Indigenous families both past and present.

Terry Fox Walk/Run/Roll

Our annual Terry Fox event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 27th .  Staff will take students for a walk / roll / run as a class at various times throughout the day.  We encourage students to wear red on this day to support the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research. Donations can be made directly to the fundraising link below, as Fern is a cashless school we will not be accepting any cash. Fundraising link:  https://schools.terryfox.ca/ FernAvenuePSToronto

Image
Join us next  Tuesday, September 19 , for our Welcome Back BBQ and community party. A little different this year -- steamies instead of bbq'd hot dogs, but it will still be a fine time. "BBQ" starts at 5 and will last until we run out of hot dogs.  Hot dog and a drink will be $5.*    We'll have a band, and if the weather is good, you can relax on our new field. You can also spend some time volunteering! We need people to help with set-up, take-down, selling tickets, and handing out hotdogs. See the volunteer link below. https://www.signupgenius.com/.../10C084DAAAE23A4FECE9... *We want to keep the cost of this event accessible, so if the price is out of reach for your family, please reach out to Principal Rosanna Sardella, or Vice-Principal Steve Lefkos or School Council co-chair Alison McLean and we will assist you.

First School Council Meeting: September 26

COME ONE, COME ALL -- FIRST SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING OF THE YEAR! TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 26, 6:30-8:30 via Zoom Hello friends!  Kids are back at school, so it's time for parents, caregivers, guardians, grandparents, aunties, uncles etc. to get back to School Council. There's no secret handshake required: if you have a kidlet at Fern Ave P.S. then we'd love for you to join us.  We're also happy to have folks from Ferncliff or our feeder schools (who aren't quite at Fern Ave. PS) join to listen in and learn more about what happens when your kid hits Fern. This is the first meeting of the year, so we will be holding elections, brainstorming goals for the coming year, and generally getting to know one another.  We will also have an update on things happening in the school.  Learn how the sausage is made!  And how many hotdogs we sold! So save the date in your calendar.  Rosanna will send the link in Zoom on the day of the meeting in messenger! PLEASE NOTE  If you are NOT cur

BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS WELCOME BACK BBQ * SEPTEMBER 19

Image
Join us Tuesday  September 19, 5pm to when we run out of hot dogs  for our annual tradition, the Welcome Back BBQ , the night of Curriculum Night.  New twist this year -- we're foregoing the actual BBQ in favour of cooked hot dogs, but we'll have a fixins buffet.  And the all Fern parent band, the Super Spreaders, will be spreading good vibes with their Canadiana covers.... you will know the words and you will sing along.  So grab a hot dog, pull up a picnic blanket, and hang out with your neighbours on a school night in our fabulous field. See you next week!

School Council needs class reps to help communicate with Fern families. We've had a few veterans return, but still have some empty spots. If you have a child in one of the following classes and you would like to be a communication conduit (and occasional organizer of end of term gifts if you're feeling ambitious), please email  aurora.ratcliffe@gmail.com . Image
Dear Fern Primary Families, We are forming a Fern Primary Cross Country running team.  This is open for all students in grades 1, 2, and 3.  We will practise 2-3 times a week before school to prepare for a race to be held away from school with other schools (date and location TBA).  Any student who participates regularly will be eligible to compete. Our first practice will be this  Tuesday, September 12th  in the Junior/Senior yard from  8:30 until 9:00 .  Students will be supervised at this time as staff will be outside at 9:00 for their duty coverage. Practices will run  every Tuesday and Thursday morning, at school.  On  Fridays , there is an optional practice at Sorauren Park, from 8:30-9:00. All practices will be held weather permitting. If it is raining heavily, or if there is lightning/thunder, practice will be cancelled.   Please wear running shoes and bring a water bottle. Students who attend Ferncliff Daycare can be picked up at 8:20 from their daycare rooms for practices. Pl
