A reminder that a TPH nurse is scheduled to hold an immunization clinic for grades 7 and 8 students at Fern on December 16th from 9am to 3 pm in the Auditorium.

We would like to thank the generosity of Loblaws for their pumpkin donation towards Fern PS.  Pumpkins were delivered this past week so each class could decorate a pumpkin in celebration of Halloween. We appreciate this support and spirit of giving to our school.  Thank you to Corrinne Muccilli for making it happen!

November 6 - 12 is Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario. This annual event honours the importance of treaties and helps students in Ontario learn more about treaty rights and relationships.  By learning more about our collective treaty rights and obligations, we can create greater understanding and nurture relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Ontario. This is a commitment we fulfil as part of Truth and Reconciliation.

On Friday, November 11th  we will be hosting our annual Remembrance Day Assembly at 10:45 am in our auditorium .  Families are welcome to come and join us if you wish. It remains very important to pause on November 11th to honour our veterans and those who serve and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The next School Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2nd at 6:30 pm via ZOOM . The Zoom link will be sent out that morning.  All families are welcome to join us!

Our Student Parliament has planned a Halloween Dance for all grade 7 and 8 students on Monday afternoon in the auditorium. There will be a games and activities option for students who do not wish to attend the dance. All Kindergarten to grade 6 students will be participating in our annual Halloween Parade on Monday at 1pm . If it rains we will parade inside the school. Families are invited to come and enjoy the parade!

Congratulations to our senior girls soccer team for becoming south city of Toronto finalists! Our team improved throughout the season with practices and tournament games, and showed great enthusiasm and team spirit in their matches. Our girls won many games to reach the south finals while also demonstrating great team work and skills. Our team lost in the finals 2-1, in a closely contested game.  This has been a fun season for our team that also brought the first pennant of the year back to Fern Ave.  Well done Fern soccer team! On Monday, October 31st,  Fern senior students will participate in a Halloween Dance in our auditorium in the afternoon.  We thank our student parliament for their work in this initiative.

After winning their last tournament, the Fern Junior Boys' soccer team advanced to the quarterfinal where they will play an elimination game vs. an opponent (TBD).  The game is currently scheduled to be held on the Fern soccer field this Thursday October 20th starting at 1:30 pm.

Although it seems early, preparations are underway for our Winter Concert and celebration of learning!  Save the date - December 8th - more details to come closer to the time!

Plans are underway for our annual Halloween parade on Monday, October 31st at 1 pm .  Our parade will be held outdoors, weather permitting. If it rains we will parade indoors. Please note that costumes are a family choice and students can wear orange or black.

Do you have old knitting supplies that you no longer use/need?  Fern Avenue is starting a Jr/Sr knitting club, and we will gladly take any donations of knitting needles or yarn, you are looking to clear out.  Donations can be placed in the cardboard box, in front of the office, beginning Monday, October 17th. To support our Grade 8 students and families, the TDSB will be hosting a series of Preparing for High School Information Sessions. Students and families from any grade are welcome to attend.  The series includes:  The Grade 8 to Grade 9 Transition Information Session , taking place on November 1, 2022 , will share the Top 10 Tips and Considerations in the Transition to High School. This presentation is designed to augment the work already taking place through secondary open houses and at the Grade 8 schools.  The Student Interest Programs Information Session , taking place on November 3, 2022 , will help students and families learn more about local programs, Facilitated Access to Skilled Trades programs, out-of-area admissions and applying to centralized programs and schools, including:  Arts Focus Programs/Schools (elementary and secondary)  CyberARTS Programs (elementary and secondary)  Elite Athlete Programs (elementary and secondary)  Integrated Technology School  International Ba

The entry point to Early French Immersion for September 2023 is Junior Kindergarten as it was this year.  The application to the Early French Immersion program will remain an online process managed by the Central French Department and applications must be completed online between October 31 and November 25, 2022.   An offer of placement in the program (not a specific school) is guaranteed to all on-time applicants. Families with an older sibling currently in an Early French Immersion program are still required to complete an online application for the new student.  Visit the TDSB website for more information about Early French Immersion , Virtual & In-Person Information Sessions or the Application Process .  Note registration for regular JK programs happen in February.

Congratulations to all our runners who participated in the meet last Monday at Centennial Park. We were very proud of your sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and watching each of you cross the finish line. Well done everyone! We are excited to share that 11 grade 3s came in the top 50 and are moving on to the West Finals on Tuesday, October 18th at Centennial Park . An email will be sent this weekend to these 11 students with details about 2 more practices ( October 11 and 13 at Sorauren Park at 8:30 a.m .) and the next race.  If you have any questions please email me at kerry.heller@tdsb.on.ca Finally, the team would like to send a grateful thank you to Mme Miya for her amazing job getting us organized for the race last week. It was a huge undertaking with so many students participating.

Due to conflicting primary extracurriculars on Thursdays at lunch, the Fern Primary Choir will now be moving to Fridays at lunch. Students will be picked up from the cafeteria as well as both primary doors at 12:15 and escorted to the music room. Be prepared to go back outside at 12:45. Congratulations to the following students who made the Fern Junior Boys' Soccer Team! We have a tournament tomorrow at Forest Hill (see schedule in an earlier post ).  The boys listed below are expected to meet at the school at 8:00-8:10AM (unless you have informed the school of alternative transportation arrangements).  We will be using the TTC to arrive in time for our first game.
