Visit the Fern Virtual Library

Hello Fern P.S. Families, A short note to let you know that we have a Fern virtual library for you to visit.  It is in the form of a google site and provides a list of some additional online educational resources that your family may use while they are learning from home.  In order to access the site, your son/daughter needs to be logged on with their TDSB account.  https://sites.google.com/a/tdsb.on.ca/fern-p-s-library/home --  Mr. Enticknap Teacher-Librarian

Give the gift of reading! Fern Book Drive on until December 20th

Want to purchase more great books for your child's classroom? There are still many ways to give the gift of reading, and  20% of book drive sales will go back to Fern to purchase more books  for our classrooms! There are three ways you can purchase books for your child's class: 1. Purchase a book online through Another's Story's website,  https://www.anotherstory.ca/?q=p.book_drive  . Select your child's grade level and choose a book from the list of amazing titles. 2. Visit Another Story bookstore in person and tell staff you are there for the Fern book drive. They'll help you purchase a book for your child's class from their Fern booklist. Another Story's address and hours are  here . 3. Donate money through School Cash Online. We will use your donation to purchase books from the Another Story list. Login to School Cash Online and select "Make a Donation." BOOK CLUB at FERN

Do you like to talk about books and read great stories? Why not join one of the book clubs at Fern? The Junior Book Clubs are for students in grades 4, 5 and 6. The Junior Girls Book Club meets e very other Monday at lunchtime, in the library, staring on Monday, September 16 and continuing on September 30, October 21, November 4, November 18, as well as December 2 . The Junior Boys Book Club meets on every other Monday at lunchtime, in the the library, starting on Monday, September 23 and continuing on October 7, October 28, November 11, November 25, and December 9 . The Intermediate Book Club is for Seniors (grades 7 and 8) and it is co-ed. They will meet every Tuesday at lunchtime in the library. Hope you can join us for a great year! Library Parent Volunteers Requested

Dear Fern P.S. community, I am looking for parent volunteers to help out with the upkeep of the school library while classes are signing out books in the morning (9:00-11:45). Duties may include book sign out, shelving, cataloguing books and helping students to find books of interest. Lost or Misplaced Library Books

Hi parents,   This is a request to search for any Fern P.S. library books that may have found a home on your bookshelves.  We are still in the process of trying to get all of our school books returned before next Friday.  Students have been notified of outstanding books but in some cases, we need your help ensuring that this happens! If your child has lost or damaged a book there is a $10 replacement fee.  Thanks for your help in getting all of our books returned to their proper home. Thank you.

Scholastic Book Fair - Looking for Parent Volunteers

Fern Avenue Public School is holding a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of November 12th to 15th in the Music Room, across from the Main Office.  Funds raised during this event will help to support the literacy initiatives the school library, including the Boys’, Girls’ and Intermediate Book Clubs, the Silver Birch and Red Maple Reading Programs, and the Get Caught Reading Program.  It will also make it possible to put the most up-to-date resources urgently needed by teachers and their students. The Scholastic Book Fair will be open  - 12:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening  We are looking for adult volunteers who might be able to give us a couple of hours to help out with manning the desk during this fund-raiser.  No experience necessary. Get Caught Reading Hall of Fame

The Reading Hall of Fame has closed for another year. Between September and May, 233 students from Grade 1 to 8 brought in reading logs and became members (a new record) and read 18,000 picture storybooks and 3770 novels, for a grand total of 21,770 books read - another record! Cathy, in Grade 7, has read 230 novels since September. Thirteen staff members, parents, former students and Fern community members sent in reading logs and joined the Get Caught Reading Honour Roll. Four Primary classes all became members of the Reading Hall of Fame, and celebrated their achievement with pizza, cupcakes and apple juice. Students, parents, staff, community members, be sure to keep a reading log over the summer and hand it into Ms. Douglas by September 7th!

LIBRARY & UNICEF UPDATE -- DECEMBER 2010

From the Library Fern’s annual Book Fair was held from November 15th to 18th. Once again, parent volunteers, library assistants and the hundreds of students and parents who visited the fair and bought books made this annual event a terrific success! Library assistants stapled letters to book fair flyers, and delivered them to classrooms. They put up signs asking for parent volunteers, and posted book fair signs in stairwells and hallways around the school. They also gave up recesses and lunch hours to set up for the fair, straighten books, direct children and their parents, and carry out any other task that was asked of them. Parents and high school students volunteered their time to help out during school hours. They sold books, directed traffic, and advised prospective buyers about good books. Once again, this year, Paul Stones volunteered his services to run the book fair from Monday to Thursday. He came in and set it up, carting tabl...
