Fern in the News: Replace Your TDSB Issued Mask!

Thanks to Fern parent Cortleigh Teolis for bringing the quality of TDSB-issued masks to our attention.    CBC Marketplace recently did a study on the quality of masks. Cortleigh did some research, and discovered that the masks provided by the TDSB fall in the category of "WORST/AVOID."  Cortleigh brought it to Rosanna's attention, and the school administration is working with the TDSB to replace the black masks distributed at the beginning of the year.  See the article below for Cortleigh's interview with the CBC, and the Marketplace article for masks to avoid.  Meanwhile, we know you have a lot on your plate, but if you have alternative masks available, please refrain from wearing the black TDSB-issued masks (which are a cotton/polyester), as well as other face coverings listed in the “WORST/AVOID” category, including neck gaiters and bandanas.  If you don't have alternative masks, Fern Admin will supply a disposable blue medical style mask, ranked as a top perf

Reminder: School Council Meeting -- Thursday, November 26, 6:30-8:30

Zoom away with us to a remote room where we can all gather!  It's been a tough week. We won't lie. The most recent lockdown is hitting a lot of us hard. But here's a chance to come together as a community, and try to do something positive to help each other, and help our neighbours. So if you are a Fern parent or caregiver, please join us.  We will be updating you on things going on in the school, and hope to set goals for the remainder of this school year and brainstorm the ways Fern can use its organizational and fundraising to help others in our community.  Tricia McGovern will be sending out the zoom link over the next few days. Please forward any specific questions or agenda items to fernaveschoolcouncil@gmail.com .  Look forward to seeing you on screen!  Best,  School Council Exec

A Message from School Council

Hello Fern Families, We're headed for lockdown. Here's what the City of Toronto is asking us as of Friday, November 20 : "Residents of Toronto are strongly encouraged to stay home, except for essential travel, such as groceries and other necessities, like medicine; healthcare appointments; exercise; school; child care; and going to work. By reducing the number of people who are out in the community, we reduce the number of potential contacts and exposures to COVID-19, which will drive down case counts.  Having family or friends who are not members of your household in your home for a social visit is prohibited under provincial orders. Essential support workers and emergency repairpersons are exempt. Outdoor organized public events or social gatherings are limited to a maximum of 10 people. Non-essential travel outside of one’s own community is strongly discouraged."   What does this mean for Fern Ave PS? The good news is that schools are still open and we seem to be d

Remembrance Day - Virtual Assembly

Image
On Wednesday, November 11th , students and staff at Fern and across the city will mark Remembrance Day. For Remembrance Day, teachers will make connections between global events and students' lives by promoting peace within our school community.  In the past, staff, students , families and the wider community would join us and commemorate this solemn occasion by joining our school assembly in our auditorium. This year due to COVID-19 we will not be able to come together at Fern PS . We look forward to the day when we can once again, embrace this day together.  Until then, please join us in spirit at 11am, as we observe a moment of silence, hold us in your thoughts and prayers and know that we are sharing this moment together even though not physically together.  Families are invited to join us in our Virtual Assembly on November 11th at 11am . Ms. McGovern will be sending this out to all our families via School Messenger. All students will receive a poppy to wear on November
