Meeting Minutes from June 2018 Fern School Council Meeting

Lost or Misplaced Library Books

Hi parents,   This is a request to search for any Fern P.S. library books that may have found a home on your bookshelves.  We are still in the process of trying to get all of our school books returned before next Friday.  Students have been notified of outstanding books but in some cases, we need your help ensuring that this happens! If your child has lost or damaged a book there is a $10 replacement fee.  Thanks for your help in getting all of our books returned to their proper home. Thank you.

Junior Concert: Encore Performance

Dear Parents/Guardians, On Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 2:30PM in the auditorium there will be an ENCORE PERFORMANCE of the JUNIOR CONCERT. Back By Popular Demand....Rooms 209, 211, 207, 205 and 201 will be performing. Should you have any further questions please call the office. Thank you.

We Pop for Change - Thursday June 21, 2018

On Thursday June 21, Me to We will be selling popcorn during the afternoon recess for $1. All money raised will go towards Indspire - a national Indigenous-led charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the long term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada.

COSTI Refugees & Human Rights Child & Youth Poetry Contest

We are excited to inform you that poems from three Fern students were selected as the Group 2 1st (Kiran Bentley), 2nd (Tuula Freir) and 3rd (Jasmine Current) Prize Winners of the Refugees & Human Rights Child & Youth Poetry Contest! All three were presented with a plaque on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at an event scheduled to take place at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, Rotunda, celebrating World Refugee Day. COSTI will be posting the winning poems on the COSTI website and the names of winners on our social media platforms. We will also be displaying the poems in large format at the event on June 20th. Congratulations!

Refrigerator Needed

Dear Parents/Guardians, Do you have a little or big refrigerator lying around the house or cottage and would like to donate to our school.  We would be happy to take it and provide a good home for it here in our office. Please contact Vera Ciric at 416-393-9130.

Tribal Vision Dance: Grade 1 to 7

The Tribal Vision Dance for grades 1 to 7 will be held on Monday June 18, 2018 beginning at 1PM. Tribal Vision is a First Nations family dance company based on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada. The company presents the exciting dance and music of North AmericaΚΌs First PeopleΚΌs through multimedia shows and workshops with schools, festivals and special events. The Company is made up of Champion Dancers and a World Class singing champion. They love sharing their rich culture with people the world over.    

Found Wedding Band

Dear Parents/Guardians, We found a silver band with 7 diamonds and an inscription that reads "29.04.00". Please see Vera in the office if it belongs to you. Thank you!

Calling all Summer Gardeners!

We need your help! We need a few gardeners to tend to the lovely foliage during the summer months. If you have the desire to maintain the outside beauty of the school grounds, then we need YOU! The focus will be on removing weeds so the flowers, shrubs and bushes can thrive. Please refer to this link to pick a week. Thank you!

Purge, Recycle ♻️ and help make this years fun fair the best one yet!

One week to go the Fern Fun Fair and we need your help! The prize table was such a hit last year and we hope to make it even better this year. Please consider donating any gently used ( and washed ) stuffies, toys, kids books. If you can’t drop the donation off the morning of the fun fair between 8-9am then please drop in school office this week. Grade Graduation Is Coming!

Dear Parents/Guardians, Our Grade 8 Grad is two weeks away on Monday, June 25th at PCI. (209 Jameson Avenue). The ceremony will take place from 4:30PM to 5:30 PM followed by the dinner/dance at LULA Lounge from 6:00 PM to 9:45 PM. Please have your graduates meet Vera and the photographer at PCI at 3:15Pm for our group grad photo .   Please contact Vera if you have any further questions and or concerns.

Fun Fair - Calling all Bakers!

We need your cakes, pies, cookies, or any delicious goodies you can make for the Fern Fun Fair's much anticipated BAKE SALE. Please contact Janet Hoard at jleehoard@yahoo.com to let her know what you will be making. Kindly drop off your baked goods at the bake sale tent in the school yard between 9:30-10:00am on Saturday June 16 . Please remember to make peanut nut free/tree nut free baked goods only. Bike Rodeo is Next Week!

Next week will be our bike rodeo! It will be held over two days, and for students to participate they need to have their own bike or scooter and a bike/skate helmet. We will have grade 5/6 students to help out with the stations both days. Monday, June 11 - 10:30-11:30 Kindergarten classes Tuesday, June 13 - 10:30-11:45 Grades 1-4 There will be a number of stations to rotate through, each lasting 7-8 minutes each, in a similar fashion to Jump Rope for Heart. There will be games/activities in the hockey rink for students who are not able to participate. The stations will be as follows: 1. Freezie/cool-down station 2. Slow Bicycle Race (no feet) 3. Bike Tune-up station (Tentative - grade 1-4 only) 4. Obstacle Course 5. Make your own license plate (art activity) 6. Dance Zone 7. Coasting Race Thank you.

Gardening Volunteers Needed this Friday PA Day!

Fern Community! Grab your gardening tools and lend a hand this coming Friday morning - 10 am to 12 noon . Meet in the front garden! The students have been working hard in their garden and now need their parents help to finish the job! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Calling All Bakers

Dear Parents/Guardians, Our grade 8 graduation bake sale fundraiser is this Wednesday, June 6th during the am recess and possibly pm recess too. If you are able to bake some healthy treats for us we would be most appreciative and thankful. Please call Vera in the office and arrange for a time to drop off the goodies. Thank you!

Grade 8 Montreal Trip

Dear Parents and Guardians, We are in the process of finalizing our Montreal itinerary. You can expect to receive the confirmed itinerary and a recommended packing list by the end of this week, or early next week. Me to WE Indigenous Movie Night June 21st

Fern’s Me to WE presents Bee Nation  on Indigenous Peoples Day June 21st at 6:30 in Fern’s auditorium  $5 for the film, popcorn and a drink Lana Ε leziΔ‡’s Bee Nation is a heart-warming and inspiring film about First Nations youth and their families in Saskatchewan who compete at their first-ever provincial and national Canadian Spelling Bee. All proceeds will support Indspire’s Indigenous programming ( indspire.ca )

Fun Fair Donations

πŸ“š πŸ“– 🐻🐢🐼 We need your help to make the Fern Fun Fair Prize Table a success! Please donate any pre-loved toys, stuffies, games or kids books in good used condition to our prize table. Stuffies must be washed. Donations can be dropped off the morning of the fun fair (June 16th) between 8-9 am to the school yard . Thank you!
