Fern PS recognizes Orange Shirt Day

Image
On Monday, September 30th , students and staff from across the TDSB will come together and wear Orange Shirts to recognize the harm that the Residential School System did to First Nations, Metis and Inuit children and to recognize that "Every Child Matters" . Orange Shirt Day is a movement that officially began in 2013 but in reality it began in 1973 when six year old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, B.C. The date, September 30th, was chosen because that was the time of year the trucks and buses would enter the communities to "collect" the children and deliver them to their harsh new reality of cultural assimilation, mental, sexual and physical abuse, shame and deprivation. The impact of residential schools affects every Canadian (Bob Joseph, Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples, 2015). Honouring this day shows our commitment to Reconciliation. Fern students have been discussing the si

Possible Student Participation in Climate Change Rally: Information for Parents and Students

Inspired by Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, young people from around the world have joined the Fridays for Future movement and are showing their support by participating in climate change rallies. Currently, there is a student climate change rally planned for Friday, September 27 at Queen’s Park. To be clear, this is not a TDSB-sanctioned event, however we understand that students at a number of our schools may take part. At the TDSB, we honour student voice and are committed to ensuring students can express themselves individually and collectively in ways that are constructive, respectful and responsible. As a Board, we know that climate change is an important issue that needs to be addressed and that students play an important role in building an environmentally sustainable future. The TDSB EcoSchools Program provides opportunities within the classroom, the school, and the community for students to engage in education actions that prepare them with the knowledge, ski

Volunteers needed for Class Rep!

We are looking for volunteers for Class Rep. Ideally, we have someone from each class to help distribute information to parents. We are hoping that our new system will collect names electronically so you won’t have to chase people for their email address. There are a few peak times in the year such as STEM Day/Night, and when we are looking for volunteers for the Fun Fair. Your classroom teacher may also ask you to send out messages. It’s a great way to get involved, and a great way to know what’s happening at the school. If you are interested in volunteering, please email us at: fernaveschoolcouncil@gmail.com Thanks!
