There's Still Time to Give to the Parkdale Toiletry Project!

The Parkdale Toiletry Project is a Fern initiative that provides basic necessities to families and individuals in our neighbourhoods. Here are two ways families can help:  1.You can make a financial contribution by e-transfer to: thetoiletryproject@gmail.com We’ve reached 50% of our $800 goal. 2. You can drop off NEW toiletries in the Fern Lobby: Body Lotion, Shampoo, Conditioner, Razors and Deodorant.  All donations will be packed up by Fern students and given directly to those in need. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to pitch in and learn about local relief organizations.  Deadline for Donation is Monday May 29th!

Fun Fair/Fernapalooza Is Coming -- June 9th, 5pm - 8pm!

It's back -- the community party you've been waiting for! Yard games (musical chairs, three legged race, sack race, football toss, fishing....), BBQ, bake sale, cake decorating competition, cake auction... It'll take you back to the school sports days/funfairs of your youth!  But we need a lot of help to get this party off the ground....  Things We Need for the Fun Fair: 1. More volunteers and baked goods  We're about 1/3 of the way there. Encourage your grade 7 and 8's and your teens who need volunteer hours to sign up too.  2. Grade 8 Graduation Ceremony : June 22nd, 5-6pm at PCI auditorium

The Grade 8 Graduation ceremony will be held on June 22nd from 5-6pm in the PCI auditorium . Please ensure your graduate arrives by 4:30 pm .  The after party (6-10 pm) for the graduates will be at the Royal Canadian Legion at 1395 Lakeshore Blvd West.   As soon as the ceremony is done, students will make their own way to the Royal Canadian Legion on Lakeshore Blvd West where staff will be supervising this event.  As Graduation is fast approaching, School Council Graduation Committee needs your help! Volunteer Appreciation Tea/Breakfast June 7th

Wednesday, June 7th is our Volunteer Tea/Breakfast!  Please join us on June 7th from 8:15 am to 9am in our staffroom for our appreciation gathering!  We are so grateful to all our Fern volunteers and all that you do for our students.  Thank you Volunteers!

Author Visit Announcement

On Wednesday, May 31st, Canadian author Shane Peacock will be visiting Fern.  The primary English classes (Ms Nitsis, Ms Eyre and Mr Sidler’s classes) will have an opportunity to meet with him and discuss his book, “The Artist and Me”, with a possible focus on Vincent Van Gogh, bullying, art, and history.  The Junior and Senior Book Clubs will also have an opportunity to discuss his books for older students, (some we have already read), with a focus on the stories, his writing process as well as the history.  We are asking each student to contribute $7.00 to help defray the costs. Grad Committee Wine Raffle!

It's that time of year again friends -- the fan favourite -- the Grad Wine Raffle.  This is a great way for us to raise funds for the Grade 8 graduation celebration this year, and create a nest egg for next year's grad.  The Grad Committee is looking for d onations of wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and LCBO gift cards to put together into baskets to be raffled off to the school community.  Deadline for donations is June 8 . Ticket sales will start soon! Watch the blog for more details.  See poster below for details on where to drop off your donation and who to contact for more information.

Kits for a Cause

Fern Families Pitch In!  In 2022 our Fern community raised funds to give toiletry kits to over 150 local refugee families at the Romero House. This generosity inspired us to launch the Parkdale Toiletry Project to distribute basic hygiene products to under housed people throughout Parkdale. The School Council invites Fern families to support this effort between now and May 18th . All donations will be packed up by Fern students and given directly to those in need. Dress Loud Day : May 12th

May is a time to raise public awareness about hearing, speech, language, and communication as part of speech. May , Speech and Hearing month, encourages the voice of deaf and hard-of-hearing children! Dress loud day encourages all participants to dress in their loudest most colourful outfits to create awareness about the impact of hearing loss.  We look forward to seeing students in their bright colors on Friday, May 12th .

Come enjoy an evening of music and laughter as the students of Howard Jr PS take to the stage, presenting Shrek The Musical Jr.  WHERE & WHEN Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 May Doors open at 6, performance starts at 7pm Howard Jr PS, 30 Marmaduke St  Tickets available at the door.  Debit and Credit accepted, cash preferred Run time 120 minutes, including intermission when refreshments will be served  ABOUT THE SHOW  Even at the elementary level, students understand a few important life lessons: Monsters can sometimes be heroes, princesses don’t have to be traditionally beautiful, and sometimes what makes you different is what makes you special.  For 16 weeks, a cast of 28 Howard students have been dedicated to rehearsing Shrek Jr. and sharing their talents! Fern Track and Field Meets and Practices

Athletics 2023 Track and field       Dates and Location: South Conference meet – Monday May 15th@  Varsity Stadium South Conference Championships– Thursday June 6th @ Birchmount Park Stadium City Championships – Tuesday, June 13th – Birchmount Park Stadium Departure :  . Students should meet in the Fern Ave P.S.  auditorium at 8:15am.                        Departure time from school is at 8:30am . Our 1500m runners and some hurdle athletes will have to leave earlier (arrangements will need to be made with parents and volunteer drivers). Please check the schedule on the next page.
