Pool campaign update
Some members of the Let's Make Waves team have been hard at work putting a full press package together, in anticipation of the last TDSB Board meeting before summer break - June 25th at 7:30 pm.
We need your help RIGHT NOW!
This Wednesday night, there is a motion before the Board from Josh Matlow and Chris Tonks for the following:
1. That the Board reconsider its decision of June 27, 2007, as follows: That if, by February 2008, the provincial government does not agree to fund Board unfunded pools either through operating or capital grants or through a specific education mill rate, that the process of decommissioning all school-based pools effective June 1, 2008 be implemented.
2. That the Minister of Education be requested to appoint a professional with aquatics/auditing experience to help the Board review its pools before a single pool is drained in order to have correct and complete data before making decisions affecting aquatic programs.
PLEASE EMAIL YOUR TRUSTEE TODAY!
a) Let your Trustee know that you know this motion is on the agenda for Wednesday night.
b) Let them know you support this motion - and expect them to support the motion on behalf of their constituents. *
c) Ask them to let you know if they will be voting in favour of the motion.
* Reasons why they should support the motion:
David Crombie may need more time than the summer (when many people are away) to progress with finding a long-term sustainable funding model for Toronto’s school pools.
The original motion passed by board in 2007 is fatally flawed. It does not direct staff to only close 39 pools, but directs TDSB staff to decommission each and every one of the 78 operating school pools across the city - so just on that basis the first part of this motion must be a "yes".
The Board has made their decision based on inaccurate and incomplete information - our press release and backgrounder provide factual evidence to support this statement - see http://www.letsmakewaves.ca/
There isn't the commitment or expertise within the TDSB to conduct a through school pool analysis, and a professional with the right background is desperately needed to make the right decisions.
No school pool should be drained until there is a Toronto Aquatics Plan and a thorough understanding of the school pool financials.
We need 12 Trustees to vote "yes". They need to know this issue isn't going way - they need to know we will continue to pressure them to keep the school pools open. Please send your email today - it really does matter! For those that are interested - the Board meeting starting at 7;30 pm at 5050 Yonge Street is open to the public. The agenda for the meeting is attached - Pool Motion is item 12.1 - could be a late night!
Sincerely,
Nancy Abbey
