Single Service Bottle Water / Flavoured Water

Fern Public School is involved in a pilot using a water and flavoured water despenser. If you have feedback, please send an email to craig.tsuji@tdsb.on.ca or your School Council Chair abreau1@bell.net . Thanks,

Primary Objective of the Trial

Learn if the sale of single serve bottle-less water using municipal water, which is filtered and chilled by a specialized vending machine, can be successfully implemented in the Toronto District School Board.

Goals of the Trial

1. Provide an alternative method of hydrating students through the use of filtered and chilled municipal water at a price which is cheaper than current bottled water options.

2. Learn about consumer acceptance of a healthy alternative to high sugar and aspartame sweetened drinks. We will provide filtered and chilled water ($0.50 per 500 ml) and flavoured water (from concentrate) at $1.00 per 500 ml.

3. Address the environmental concerns of single use plastic bottles which end up in land fill sites as consumers will provide their own refillable container.

4. Provide vending revenues to offset the capital and variable costs and reduce the impact of lost vending machine revenues.

Trial Locations and Timing

The trial will start at Parkdale CI and Fern Avenue PS with a target of early March. There are provisions to add up to six additional locations between March 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.

Confirm Coincident Benefits

We would like to confirm the following coincident benefits during the trial.

1. Energy Savings: The EnviroPURE Vending Machine uses 90% less electricity compared to a standard 'Pop Vending Machine'. Watt meters will be employed at each machine to record electricity usage.

2. Water Savings: The EnviroPure Vending Machine uses 100% of the incoming water – there is 'zero waste water' compared to a conventional water fountain where as much as 80% of the water goes down the drain.

3. Solid Waste Disposal Costs: By reducing 'throw-away' plastic bottles, reduce the cost of collection and disposal of the empty bottles.

4. Environmental Footprint: Reduce the millions of barrels of oil that are currently going into the production and transportation of 'pre-bottled' water.

5. Leadership Role in the Community: Utilize innovative new Technology that provides healthy, 'environmentally friendly' beverages - at a fraction of the cost per drink.

Trial Partner

The TDSB has selected EnviroPURE Vending Equipment Inc. as our partner for the purposes of the trial period of March 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. EnviroPURE is one of three companies in Canada in the business of single serve bottle-less water vending (only one located in Ontario).

The TDSB has purchased two machines from EnviroPURE. EnviroPURE will do the initial set up and programming, provide drink concentrates and provide a complete service and maintenance program which includes weekly visit to each site. EnviroPURE will inspect the machine during each visit and conduct a thorough cleaning. TDSB caretaking staff will perform a basic “wipe down” daily and damp mop the floor around the machine. This is a similar work activity to the daily cleaning of current water fountains.

EnviroPURE will provide a monthly audit report which includes: number of vends for each drink, revenue generated per drink, total number of vends, gross revenue, operating expenses and a cheque for the gross profits for the month.

Background Information

Single serve bottle-less water vending is a nascent industry in North America. The industry has been in existence for three years in Great Britain but there is little publicly data available about consumption and consumer acceptance.

This trial is in response to concerns expressed by our elected Trustees, school administrators, teachers, parents and student to eliminate single serve bottled water in TDSB facilities.
