Final score: 88.2 (minimum score required: 88)
Notes on scoring
I have updated your online application form to include the scores I have given you for the “look-fors.” Based on our discussion and my observations, I have increased the scoring in questions 2.1.5, 2.1.7, 2.2.4, 3.2,3.3,3.5,4.2,4.6,and 4.7.
Program strengths
Fern Avenue J & S PS has worked hard to achieve platinum certification. It is evident to me that your school has fulfilled many of the recommendations proposed in the initial EcoSchools audit as well as taken your environmental message to Perth Avenue PS.
You have done fine work in increasing the ecological literacy across many grades. I am particularly impressed by the EcoSchools timeline used by the students to plan your year’s EcoSchools projects and the many displays of student work throughout the school—even the student made poster on the energy guzzling refrigerator disconnected and soon to be removed.
Your school opera with the theme Our Environment Past, Present and Future has proven to be a great way to increase the involvement of staff and students in the EcoSchools program. Even the backdrop was assembled from reused foil.
Encouragement of student participation and mentoring of student leaders is apparent in the large permanent footprints created by students and mounted on the schoolyard fence entitled “Small steps can lead to Big Change.” Staff support has resulted in your whole school waste, gas and electricity reductions.
I see great promise in your students’ learning in, about, and for the environment, and would encourage you to continue to model your EcoTeam collaboration and results with other schools.
Congratulations on achieving platinum EcoSchools certification!
