Fern Book Clubs!

The following announcement is from Ms. Douglas, Fern's teacher librarian.

Fern Avenue has a Junior Boys’ Book Club and a Junior Girls' Book Club, for students in Grades 4 to 6, and an Intermediate Book Club, for students in Grades 7 and 8. Run along the lines of a traditional book club, such as the ones to which many adults belong, the Book Clubs will meet every week at lunch in the Library.

We will be discussing books, doing research into the historical contexts presented in books, and learning more about popular authors. We will be making maps, trying out food, engaging in art and drama activities, and attending author talks. Readers will be linked through Academic Workspace, a password-protected TDSB electronic forum so that our book discussions can continue outside of the school day. It promises to be a wonderful year!

Families will be asked to help their readers locate copies of the chosen Book Club books, either by borrowing them from the public library or by purchasing them from a bookstore. Ms. Douglas will contact a local bookstore, or work through Canadian Children’s Book Clubs, and arrange for group purchases, if families prefer to send money to the Library. We will endeavour to select soft cover books, in an effort to keep costs at a reasonable level. We anticipate that the Book Club members might read between 4 and 6 books this year. If you are unable to pay for novels, please talk to Ms. Douglas; all discussions will remain strictly confidential. No student will be refused for financial reasons!

We are looking for sponsors for the Boys’ Book Club: parents or organizations interested in helping to fund the purchase of treats for weekly meetings, copies of books for readers whose families cannot afford them, and an end-of-year field trip to celebrate our year of reading! Please contact Ms. Douglas, by phone or by e-mail, if you are interested! We can provide charitable receipts!
