EARTH HOUR IN RONCY! Fern Ave PS invitation
Join Roncesvalles' 3rd Annual Earth Hour Candlelight Walk on Saturday March 31st.
The event is expected to start just outside the Revue around 8:15, and then the candle holding crowd will walk past the participating businesses, in a celebratory salute! Passing through the Village, the Earth Hour revellers will end up at the base of King/Queen/Roncesvalles to enjoy a post walk performance (or two). All may enjoy the magical starry night darkened-void, where hopefully the lack of ambient light will leave the participants with sense of pride.
If the weather remains unseasonably warm, a large turnout is expected and appreciated.
Cancelled if bad weather.
Please bring a recycled container to carry a candle on the walk; a limited amount of candles will be available.
In 2010, Earth Hour came to Roncesvalles. It was spearheaded by a Fern Ave PS Parent, with assistance from the RVBIA (Roncesvalles Village Business Association). The inaugural Candlelight Walk had a gathering of local acoustic performers at Grafton Park. Then MC talent/local resident, Bob Mackowycz Jr, helped usher the crowd past the many participating restaurants, bistros, bars and retail establishments – all the while, passing by the repositioned performers. Local MPP Cheri Di Novo & Councillor Gord Perks addressed the crowd briefly. CTV News and a reporter from CBC Radio followed the event. There was an excellent turnout, despite the frigid cold.
Roncesvalles and Parkdale Villages earned national recognition this past December, when WWF Canada acknowledged the coordination of the 2011 Event, in their annual report. Fern Parent, Karyn Klaire Koski helped establish that Roncesvalles Village is an eco forward community.
An exuberant vocal flash mob, graciously performed by Howard Park Emmanuel Gospel Choir, greeted the two villages as they concluded the annual Candlelight Walk. The large groups passed by the participating businesses and darkened residential streets in their respective communities, before joining at the foot of Roncesvalles and Queen Streets, in front of the Katyn Monument. Councillor Gord Perk was in attendance. A commemorative video helped capture the spirit of our wonderful neighbourhood and City TV & SNAP newspaper, covered the event. It was a cold evening yet had an excellent turnout.

For the 3rd annual event, Karyn (no longer a Fern parent after 10 years!) solicited Joanne Somers from the Fern Ave PS Platinum Eco Team, and outstanding community volunteer Sandie Drake, to assist her coordination with Keith Denning from the Roncesvalles BIA.
