Volunteers and Police Reference Checks

POLICE REFERENCE CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value the tremendous contributions of our parent and community volunteers who give so much of their time and effort to make our schools better places. While the legislation does not speak specifically to volunteers, it has been our past practice to require police reference checks on volunteers who have contact with students (including community-based coaches working with school teams)- a practice consistent with other community groups such as Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and Hockey Coaches.

The Toronto District School Board has arranged with Toronto Police Services for a special rate for volunteer police refernece checks of $16.95. At the present time, the cost of the police reference check is at the volunteer's expense. Please note cheques must be certified or money orders made payable to Toronto Police Services, no personal checks will be accepted.

Forms can be picked up in the main office, filled out and brought back to Vera Ciric for processing.
Once returned to Vera, she will forward to the PRC office.
Police Services will mail the results directly to the applicants home, PLEASE NOTE the original form must than be returned to Vera who will send it off to the PRC offfice, or the potential volunteer can bring the original form to the PRC office in person (faxes and scans are not accepted.)

Completion of the application process takes approximately 8-12 weeks.

Voulnteers who are returning this year and have already completed the full disclosure/vulnerable sector screening, with the Board, need only complete an Offence Declaration. This is not a new police check and there is no cost-it is a form to update the volunteers' police check status.
This can be completed in person with Principal Moy.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any additional questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Vera Ciric
