School Council Meeting and Elections on TUESDAY

School Council Meeting and Elections
Tuesday, September 30
6:30–8:30 pm in the Auditorium

New members are welcome. Fun and fresh ideas are encouraged!

Parent involvement at Fern Public School is not just helpful, it is vital to making the school function the way we all want it to.

You may not realize that many of the programs that define our children's experience and create positive memories are not part of the Toronto School Board's operating budget. Funds raised by Parent Council initiatives and volunteers are what power the activities families have come to enjoy year after year.

Programs such as:

  • Scientists in School: exploring the wonders of science in every classroom

  • Arts Collective: music and dance workshops, fine art installations and guest performances

  • Get Caught Reading novel sets: encouragement for young readers

  • Hot Lunch program: healthy bodies for healthy minds

  • Grade 8 Gradation: an annual celebration of achievement

  • Robotics Club & Competition: hands-on technical learning

  • Eco-Club and Free the Children: social justice initiatives

Please join us on Tuesday September 30 and support the work of your School Council team. If you're new to the school, it's a great way to find out what's going on, meet people and get involved in the community. If you've been around for awhile but hesitated to get involved, maybe this is your year. Donate an hour or two of your time, support a fundraiser or volunteer for a committee, whatever works for you. Please just get involved.

Some of our Executive members are stepping down this year and the following
Executive positions are up for election. Here's what it takes and the responsibilities involved:

  • Chair: chair Council meetings, establish schedules and prepare agendas, ensure all minutes of council meetings are recorded and maintained, coordinate committees, communicate with the Principal and speak on behalf of the Council.

  • Co-Chair: assist and support Co - Chair. The Council can choose to elect a Co-Chair or Vice-Chair.
  •
  • Treasurer: coordinate Council finances; prepare monthly financial statements and yearend report. Present for approval at Council meetings.

  • Secretary: record accurate meeting minutes to be kept on file for parent review.

In addition, we are looking for some motivated Moms and Dads to support our Committees. Many hands make lighter work. Choose a Committee that interests you and let us know what you can do to contribute:

  • Arts Collective

  • Communications

  • Eco Team

  • Fundraising

  • Grant Writing

  • Food Committee

  • Learning Skills

  • Orientation

  • Playground

  • Volunteer Recruitment

Please contact Liz Leason, School Council Co-Chair 2013/14: liz.leason@rogers.com if you are interested in volunteering.

The community needs you. Your kids will thank you.
