Volunteers In The Classroom/Police Checks

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Under Regulation 521/01 of the Education Act, school boards must obtain police record checks (PRC) on all existing and new employees, service providers and others who come into contact with our students.  Once a record check has been collected, school boards are required to collect, on an annual basis, Offence Declarations (a form to update a person's information to file by declaring any new criminal code convictions). The intent of the legislation is to ensure that schools and classrooms are safe places for students.

New Volunteers (18 years of age and over)

The TDSB values the tremendous contributions of our parent and community volunteers who give so much of their time and effort to make our school's better places.   

In order to promote and support volunteerism in our schools, while protecting the safety of students, we ask that you follow the following steps to obtain a PRC Vulnerable Sector Screening:

For Volunteers  who live in Toronto

1. The volunteers completes the Consent to Disclosure form available from Vera Ciric in the main office.
2.  The volunteer submits the completed Consent to Disclosure form with a certified cheque or money order made payable to Toronto Police Services for $20.00 to:

a) Vera Ciric who will forward it to the TDSB PRC Office
b) The TDSB PRC office by mail (address below); OR
c) The TDSB PRC office in person

Please ensure your form has a witness signature before handing/mailing in.

3.   Toronto Police Services will mail the PRC results directly to the volunteer's home address on the application form.
4.  Volunteers will need to  deliver the original (CLEARED) PRC results to Vera Ciric in the main office.
5.  The TDSB PRC office will update the online volunteer database.

For Volunteers who live outside of Toronto

1.  The volunteer contacts his/her home/regional police service directly and completes the request for a PRC vulernable sector screening according to their process
2. The police services will mail the PRC results directly to the volunteer's home address on the application form. 
3.  The volunteer may:
a) Mail the original results to the TDSB PRC office; OR
b) Deliver the original PRC results to Vera  in the main office.
4.  The TDSB PRC office will update the online volunteer database.

Returning Volunteers 

Returning Volunteers who have already completed the PRC vulnerable sector screening with the TDSB must complete an Annual Offence Declaration, an update to a person's PRC information on file declaring any new criminal code conviction. There is no cost associated with the Annual Offence Declaration.  

Completing the Annual Offence Declaration
1.  Vera will  have volunteers complete declarations on the Principals website. 

PLEASE NOTE IN ORDER TO VOLUNTEER IN YOUR CHILD'S' CLASSROOM, ON A FIELD TRIP OR SPORTING EVENT YOU MUST HAVE A POLICE RECORD CHECK AND PRC VULNERABLE SECTOR SCREENING.
