Reminder: Fern Bike Rodeo!

The Eco Team is very excited about our upcoming Bike Rodeo! CultureLink Community will be delivering this program in partnership with TDSB and EcoSchools.

Who: Only the primary students who have returned their signed permission forms to their teachers
When: Wednesday, May 10, 2017 for the whole morning, 9:00 am to 11:45 am
Where: Junior yard

All children participating in the Bike Rodeo must bring their own bicycle, a lock (and key), and a helmet. We recommend that your child also bring a water bottle and healthy snacks. Please apply sunscreen before arriving to school on Wednesday morning.

Important information:

Parents, please place your child's bike key on a necklace labelled with his/her name. Please ensure that your child knows how to use the key or combination for his/her bike lock. There will be adult volunteers on hand to help if needed.

Please have your child drop off their bicycle in the junior yard, anytime from 8:45 am to 9:00 am. Please DO NOT LOCK up the bikes before the rodeo, as the children will need quick and easy access to their bicycles at 9:10 am. There will be parent volunteers on hand to watch over the bicycles to ensure that they are safe and help your child bring his/her bike to the designated station. There will also be CultureLink Community staff setting up for the Bike Rodeo. There will be signs at each station, so that the children know where to go for their first station. There will be a rotation of three stations from 9:10 to 10:10 am, the regular break for recess in the primary yard, and then from 10:30 to 11:30 am, there will be three new stations for the children.

Our Bike Rodeo program consists of 6 stations, each taking about 20 minutes including transit time. The first three stations:
Helmet fit
ABC check (ensuring bicycle is safe to ride)
Signs and signals
BREAK - regular recess break in the primary yard from 10:10 am to 10:25 am

The second three stations:
Starting and braking
Shoulder check and control
Group ride

Teachers, parent volunteers, cycling staff and Eco Club students will all be outside to assist in any way needed.

Once the bike rodeo is done, the students will need to lock their bikes. The students will lock their bikes/helmets along the fence in the primary yard or at the bike racks located closer to the parking lot. Parent volunteers will be helping the children lock up their bikes.

Thank you in advance to all the parent volunteers for their help during this fun, educational and exciting event happening at Fern. The Eco Team could not do it without your help and support!

Please contact an Eco Team teacher if you have any questions.

Happy riding!

Thank you,

Mme Tse, Mme Mably and Mme Miya
