FERN SPORTS: FALL UPDATE 2018
It has been a great year so far for sports and athletic competitions for our students at Fern P.S.
A large number of our students had a chance to participate in cross country, meeting individual challenges, and competing with peers. Eighteen junior and senior students, our largest number ever, competed in the city finals for cross country, with most finishing in the top third of their races.
Fern teams also did well in soccer this fall, as both junior and senior teams won most of their games at their respective tournaments. Finally our junior boys’ football team made it to the conference championships for their division. Congratulations to everyone for their athletic successes, individual and team!
Late fall sports involve boys volleyball and girls basketball. As our gym is currently under renovation, our senior boys’ volleyball team is practicing at Howard P.S., and our senior girls basketball team is practicing at Garden P.S. These teams switch in January, with girls playing volleyball and the boys in basketball leagues and tournaments.
House league starts with junior basketball in January. Traditionally we have over 70 of our juniors participating with one of the six teams, and playing in the gym during lunches in what is anticipated to be a fun athletic and social event at our school for the winter months.
Finally, our junior and senior ice hockey teams will start their practices in December and play their games in January and February.
This is going to be another great year for extracurricular sports for our school, true to our strong belief of the importance of physical activity and healthy athletic competition. Please refer to the Fern Sports 2018-2019 document for more on teams committed at Fern for this year, the dates, and coaches. More teams will be added closer to scheduled play.
