Welcome back from School Council!

Hello Fern families. We’re looking forward to another great year. If you’re new to Fern, welcome! If you are returning, welcome back!

This email is to let you know how we'll communicate with you, how you can get involved, and to highlight some of the important events coming your way.

Communications

If you are receiving this email, you are subscribed to the blog newsletter, or are reading it on the Fern Ave Events Facebook page. Congratulations, you are ahead of the curve and you will be in the know!

If you want to be even more informed and receive information specific to your child’s classroom, or information that we cannot post on the blog, (i.e. details related to teacher contract negotiations), please sign up for your class list. We will be sending out a link in the next couple of days that will tell you how to do so.

We try to avoid hard copies, and will only rarely send home things on paper. So PLEASE read your email and check the blog.

Updated Playground Website! Donatetofern.com!

If you’re interested in information about our Playground Revitalization, check out our newly revamped Playground website at donatetofern.com.

As returning parents will know, we have until October 1, 2019 to finish fundraising for our playground. We’re hovering around $150K right now, which is great, but we’d like to hit the $200K mark in the next few weeks. There is still time to donate!

Meanwhile, if you have any leads on corporate sponsorship, we’d love to hear from you. Our sponsorship packages are detailed on donatetofern.com.

Thanks so much to Fern parent Diego Casco and his team at the Casco Agency for donating their time to make donatetofern.com look so beautiful!

Upcoming Events

Tuesday, September 17 is Curriculum Night (Meet the Teacher), and School Council will be hosting a "Pay-What-You-Can-Welcome-Back-Barbecue". Please bring your own plates and utensils if you can.

We be looking for potluck donations of veggies and desserts, for volunteers to help us out, and for folks involved in various School Council committees and clubs to be on hand. Time TBD.

Wednesday, September 18, 6:30-8:30
is our first School Council meeting of the year. We will send another reminder, but mark your calendar. We’ll have childcare and pizza. We will send out a list of open Executive and Committee positions in advance of the meeting.

On a sad note, unfortunately we have to postpone our "Taste of Roncy Gala" currently scheduled for September 27. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to put it together, especially Mark, Bliss, Jessica, Veronique, Rosanna, Vera, and the community members who had committed their time and food. We have run into some logistical and technical issues on that date, so are hoping to postpone the Gala to later in the year. We will keep you posted. We were really pleased that so many people approached us recently wondering how they could buy tickets! Great to know the interest was there, even in the chaos of back to school.

Other events

Stay tuned for other great events coming your way. This year we plan to repeat events from previous years, including Fern Fun Flicks, the Spring Fling and the Fun Fair. We're planning a Halloween costume swap this fall (The Fern Exchange), a bigger and better version of Ferncon for the Dungeons and Dragons players in your life, and possibly an Artisan Market in November or December.

Pancake Night was wildly successful last March so we’re definitely doing that again, and we’re exploring the possibility of another community meal such as a Chili Night or other food-related community event using our cafeteria. We worked our tails off last year to create a mix of accessible community events alongside our bigger ticket fundraisers, and want to keep up that momentum. If you’ve got ideas for fundraisers or community events, please let us know.

How to get involved? Questions? Comments?

Please come to the first School Council meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 18.

If you cannot make the first meeting, but would like to be involved, either on our School Council Executive, on one of our committees, or as a class rep, please let us know. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you can even donate an hour once in awhile, we'd love to hear from you.

As always, if you would like to get in touch, please email us at fernaveschoolcouncil@gmail.com

Best,
School Council Exec
