Construction of Streetcar Right of Way on The Queensway

Correction: Construction Update #59

The City’s contractor will start the third (and final) stage of the KQQR project on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. In order to complete this work, Roncesvalles Avenue will close to through traffic that morning, from Queen Street West to Harvard Avenue. At the same time, King Street West will re-open to through traffic at the KQQR intersection.

Crews will begin the following planned work on Roncesvalles Avenue (Queen Street West to Harvard Avenue):

  • Replacement of the 100-year-old + watermain on the west side of Roncesvalles Avenue
  • Re-lining of existing sewers
  • Reconstruction of the road
  • Replacement of TTC track and installation overhead wiring
  • Installation of streetcar platforms (bump-outs) on Roncesvalles Avenue. Further details on this will be provided in next week's email update
  • Streetscaping

By bundling all this work and completing it in one shot, the City is seeking to lessen the likelihood of having to return (in the near future) and disrupt residents and businesses with more construction. In addition, by replacing and/or extending the life cycle of aging infrastructure, as per the current plan, future costly and impactful watermain breaks for instance, can be avoided.

Stage 3 is expected to be completed by late December 2022.

Travel impacts

On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, Roncesvalles Avenue (Queen Street West to Harvard Avenue) will close to through traffic and King Street West (at the KQQR intersection) will re-open to through traffic.

Sidewalks will remain open on both sides of Roncesvalles Avenue for people walking. Given the full road closure, people cycling can dismount and use available sidewalks.

Pay and display parking will not be permitted within the closed section of Roncesvalles Avenue. Parking will continue to be available north of Harvard Avenue and on Queen Street West.

People driving can also expect continued reduced travel lanes on The Queensway (Parkside Drive to Roncesvalles Avenue) while the City’s contractor completes remaining Stage 2 work. Learn more about this and other travel restrictions under the 'What to Expect During Construction' tab.

Emergency access will be maintained at all times.

TTC service impacts

These service adjustments are mapped in the Temporary Route Change poster that has been posted along the route.

Rationale for Stage 3 504 King service detour

After careful review of the streets in the area, the TTC decided to detour the 504 King replacement bus for Stage 3 via Parkside Avenue - the closest arterial road. This was due to the presence of on-street parking on local streets creating unacceptable clearances for buses to safely pass / turn, and a strong likelihood that buses would not be able to pass garbage trucks on residential waste collection days.
