Black History Month - Everyday voices against Racism

Traditionally during Black History Month, Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today. As a country born of colonialism, our equity-deserving communities have had to struggle to access the same rights, freedoms, and privileges that white people experience.

As anti-Black racism continues to exist in our society - in our schools, in our playgrounds and in our neighborhoods, we must continue to reinforce the importance of educating ourselves and acting to support structural changes. At Fern PS, we are committed to becoming anti-racists who will work together to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone - staff, students and families - to unite, learn, and grow.

This year, students at Fern PS will be engaged in discussions and activities with a focus to learn about social justice. We will be connecting the past and the present as well as unpacking important present-day conversations and events to help us understand that we all have a role to play in making a better and more just future for all!

Fern PS values the lived experiences of members of our school community, and we invite parents/guardians who would be interested in being a classroom guest presenter to our students during Black History Month. Presentations can be very unique and individually specific, or could be centered around Black experiences and voices, histories and identities.

If you are interested in sharing with our students, kindly contact Mme. Sardella or Mr. Lefkos directly.
