Fern Parent Community Gives Back this December
Hello Fern families,
We’re four weeks away from the holidays, and the School Council has a lot planned to help our school community and help our neighbours! We have FOUR interlocking pieces to connect with our community…. READ TO THE END
1. Fern Fun Flicks – The Grinch -- Thursday December 7 -- ALL PROCEEDS TO PARKDALE COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
Movie starts at 6pm (doors open at 5:30). Get your tickets*
And volunteer or commit to the bake sale here: sign up to volunteer.
DONATION BINS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR FOOD DRIVE AND FOR TOY DRIVE (DETAILS BELOW)
*We will set aside tickets for student volunteers, but ask parent volunteers to please remember to buy tickets for themselves and their kids.

2. Community Toy Drive -- DEADLINE MONDAY DECEMBER 10! HELP US COLLECT A THOUSAND TOYS!
Fern is partnering with Umoja Soccer School (Fern parent run), Scooter Girl, the Guardian Pharmacy, and Roncesvalles United, (and other local schools....) to run a toy drive for West End families. We are leveraging our school contacts across Ward 7 to get as many schools on board as possible. So far we have parents and kids involved from Garden, Dr, Rita Cox, and UFA. Roncy United is offering their space -- this is not a religiously affiliated project.
How can I help?
a) DONATE TOYS: NEW unwrapped gifts by Monday, December 10*, to the bins in the Fern Ave P.S. lobby.
Some ideas: sports equipment, building sets, arts & crafts, board games, puzzles, books, magazines, snow toys, etc!
b) DONATE CASH: Can’t decide what to donate? The organizers will do the shopping for you! E-transfer to coachdale@umojasoccer.com by Friday December 8th. Please write “Toy Drive” in the note!!! Sorry, tax receipts are not possible BUT good vibes guaranteed.
c) SHOP LOCAL: Shop at Scooter Girl for toys or gift cards for the toy drive, and Scooter Girl will donate 10% back to the toy drive. Gift cards are especially helpful, because then we can round out the collection of toys to make sure there's something for everyone. Scooter Girl can also deliver toys to the toy drive for you if you can't make it yourself or if you shop online: https://scootergirltoys.com/
d) SPREAD THE WORD: Run a mini-toy-drive with your friends/colleagues/family. Drop the gifts off at Fern by Monday December 10, OR at Roncesvalles United Church (at Roncesvalles and Wright) on December 13 from 8am-10am, or contact coachdale@umojasoccer.com an alternative drop-off time and location.
*The final, firm, we really mean it, deadline for all collection is December 13, but we will only be collecting at Fern until December 10. If you want to donate before Dec 13, and you miss the Fern drop off, contact coachdale@umojasoccer.com.
3. Parkdale Community Food Bank Food Drive until FRIDAY DECEMBER 15
The need at local food banks is staggering this year. Starting now, until Friday December 15, we are running our annual food drive. There are a few ways to help:
a) DONATE FOOD: Please donate non-perishable food items to the bins in the front foyer of the school until Wednesday December 15. Check their webpage here for a list of highest need items: https://www.pcfb.ca/food-drives
b) MOVIE NIGHT: Buy a ticket or some pizza or some baked goods at our movie night! All proceeds from the movie night December 7 will go to the Parkdale Community Food Bank.
c) DONATE CASH: If you would rather donate money directly to the food bank, consider donating here: https://www.pcfb.ca/donate
d) DELIVER FOOD TO FOOD BANK: Volunteer to help transport food to the food bank on Friday December 15 by emailing fernaveschoolcouncil@gmail.com
4. Scooter Girl Shopping Days – Dec 8 and 9
Another annual tradition, Scooter Girl shopping days will take place on Dec 8 and 9. All the area schools have their shopping days on the same dates (Scooter Girl helps a lot of folks), so if you shop at Scooter Girl on these dates for toys or gift cards, tell them you are a Fern parent and Scooter Girl will donate 10% back to Fern Ave. P.S. for use in things like prizes and silent auction donations. OR you can ask for the $ to go to the toy drive. And, WHAT A CONVENIENT TIME AND PLACE TO BUY TOYS FOR THE TOY DRIVE! (See how this all ties together, we thought about this….;)
