Bike and Scooter Storage During School Hours

Image
As the warm weather is upon us, we are seeing more bikes and scooters being used to get to and from school. That is great to see, as it not only alleviates the traffic on our busy one way streets, but also it gets the students active and promotes healthy, active choices.  We do need bikes and scooters remaining outdoors to be locked. We have a scooter parking lot inside Exit #5 if your child wishes to park it here. Many students walking upstairs and in the hallways with scooters is a safety concern.  Please ensure your child labels their scooter if they park it inside exit #5. We do not want items going missing throughout the day!

Moving for the 2023-2024 School Year?

Image
As we are in the process of preparing for next year, we would appreciate knowing if you are moving out of the Fern school boundaries for the upcoming school year or planning a school change.  If any families are moving and their child(ren) will not be attending Fern, please inform the office as soon as possible. This information is important as we plan for next year.

Pool Update

Image
We are very pleased to have hired a new aquatic instructor at the end of January, welcome Alex Cianfarani! The students have been enjoying being in the pool on a regular schedule.  Unfortunately, on Friday we suddenly had a mechanical malfunction with the pool filters and have had to close the pool. On Monday, we are expecting the pool specialists to come and hopefully fix this issue so we can have our students swim again. As of now, there will be no swim on Monday due to this issue.  We will keep you posted through your teachers when we can commence swim again! Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Bus Loading Zone: Wright Ave.

A friendly reminder ...as students are dropped off in the mornings and picked up in the afternoons by bus, please do not park in the bus loading zone.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

Water Bottles and Utensils

Image
We are asking your cooperation in ensuring that students bring their own utensils and water bottles to school.  With the discontinuation of all plastics, we have limited supplies to provide for students. Bringing reusable cutlery and a water bottle encourages our students to be stewards of the earth and do their part in protecting our environment.  We thank you for your assistance in this.

Valentine's Day: February 14th

Image
On Tuesday, February 14th , staff and students are invited to dress in red, white or pink to celebrate Valentine's Day.  As always, participation in these initiatives are voluntary and not mandatory.  Our student leadership team will be selling Candy Canes on this day during recess and lunch recess for $2.00. All proceeds will go to the Grade 8 Graduation trip to Montreal.  If you wish, students are welcome to exchange Valentine Cards this year. Should your child choose to participate, we kindly ask that a card be brought for each member of the class cohort.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day: January 27th

Image
January 27th is designated by the United Nations General Assembly as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD). Since 2005, the UN and its member states have held commemoration ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism. On this day, all around the world, people of good will gather to remember the victims of the Holocaust and pledge themselves to creating a world that is free of antisemitism, bigotry, hatred and violence.  Fern grade 8 students have been invited to be the live audience at our 5050 Yonge St Board Office for a conversation with Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter. We look forward to this great learning opportunity for our students.

Reminder - Fern 3 Weeks of Giving - Week 2: Sock Drive

Image
Socks 4 Souls  We are asking all who are able, to please donate new and unused socks! You might wonder... why socks? Socks are one of the most needed, but least donated articles of clothing. A regular supply of new socks helps to prevent foot-related diseases and ensures that someone experiencing homelessness can walk to shelters, job interviews, and get help they need.  Thank You in advance for your help with this initiative!
