Principal's June Letter

As the 2010- 2011 academic year draws to a close, Ms. Tasevski and I reflect on how far we have come in so short a span of time. School Council is to be acknowledged for their compassion, diligence and determination to put the needs of all children first in an equitable way. Teachers, and this would mean all the variety of TDSB employees who work with our children everyday, have embarked on the breathtaking journey of continuous improvement, moving outside their historical comfort zones and have displayed a willingness to take on new challenges and try new approaches to teaching. Students have been enthusiastically involved in our new initiatives and genuinely seem to want to construct a more just and civil society, both at school and at home. Many times we have been touched by the small demonstrations of gentle humanity between young individuals in the classroom and on the playground for no other reason than it was the right thing to do. We are heartened by this experience.

We eagerly anticipate new and returning teachers joining our school complement this September. I know they will bring fresh perspectives, vitality, and energy to our school. We have already started to infuse our curricular programming with greater intentionality, and seek to better align our Teaching and Learning Critical Pathways and grade-by-grade planning for next year. Character education will continue to receive a great deal of our attention. Our strongest focus will be on improving our teaching practices in order to achieve high academic standards.

We are excited for our children who are leaving us to begin their next steps along the journey of their lives. We are also excited at the prospects for those who will remain with us, until it is their turn to spread their wings.

It is an honour and a privilege to be a part of your lives and the development of your children. We look forward to next September. We, on behalf of the staff of Fern Avenue Junior and Senior Public School, wish each of you a safe and restful summer.

Mr. Moy
