King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles (KQQR) Construction Update & Virtual Trailer Drop-In Session Link
Work, Traffic and Transit:
Michael Vieira
The City's contractor is making excellent progress with the advance works, which began on Friday, February 12 with watermain replacement and sewer relining on all traffic lanes approaching the KQQR intersection.
According to information provided by the contractor..., the following work and traffic impacts will continue into the next couple of weeks.
· Curb lane rolling closures related to the watermain replacement work on King Street West (on approach to the KQQR intersection);
· Curb lane rolling closures related to sewer relining work on Queen Street West, Roncesvalles Avenue and The Queensway (on approach to the KQQR intersection); and
· Single lane closures related to the bridge rehabilitation work on Parkside Drive
One travel lane in each direction for people driving and cycling will continue to be maintained at all times.
Depending on the work taking place, lane closures may last anywhere between a few days (or less) to 1 week (or more).
TTC service in this area continues to be unaffected at this time.
Pedestrian access will continue to be maintained at all times.
Paid duty officers, or traffic agents will be deployed, as required.
Sewer Relining Odour
On Wednesday, the Project Manager and I were alerted by local residents about a strong odour in The Queensway/Glendale Avenue area. After investigating, the City inspector determined that the odour was caused by the sewer lining work. More specifically, by the substance being used to reline the sewers. I can confirm that the substance is safe and does not pose a public health hazard.
First Virtual Drop-In
On Tuesday morning we hosted our first virtual trailer drop-in session. A big thank you to those of you that attended – your time is always super appreciated. To remind everyone, these drop-in sessions will take place every Tuesday (9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.) and anyone can drop-in at any time to ask questions about the KQQR construction. A representative from Councillor Perks' office and myself will be on the call. I will then report back on main issues / questions raised and will also share any key issues / questions with you in these weekly e-updates.
The main items discussed on Tuesday were:
· Clarification of how issues should be communicated to City staff
o During business hours, please call 416-392-3074
o After hours (5 p.m.), please call 311
o Via email to: kqqr@toronto.ca
· Concern about traffic infiltrating into local neighbourhood streets and what was being done to avoid that.
o Through the KQQR Traffic Management Plan
o Installation of 72 static and portable variable message signs in area bounded by Islington, Dupont, Strachan and the Lake/Gardiner
o Construction Update notice to be mailed out in early March with language urging drivers (not headed to KQQR area) to use alternate routes, namely main streets: Bloor, Dundas, Lansdowne, Lake Shore etc.
o News releases and tweets throughout construction.
· Request to have "Cyclists Please Dismount" signage in place on the approach of the bridge at Beaty Park (south-west side of KQQR), as there are a lot of conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists in this area
o This request has been submitted to the Project Manager for review.
· Ensure accessibility needs are being met at medical clinic near 27 Roncesvalles Avenue and Copernicus Lodge.
o We have engaged Copernicus Lodge and will reach out to the medical clinic over the next week
