Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters – Friday September 30, 2022

Image
Why Orange Shirts? Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in May 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’ story ( https://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html) of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.  Hear Phyllis’ story here ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll1pUrK29MM )  Students are encouraged to wear orange.

Terry Fox represented the best that Canadians have to offer. He was an example of courage, humility, determination, and perseverance. From a young age he exemplified these attributes that made him an inspiration for not only Canada but the entire world.  Fern will continue to support Terry's dream by participating in the Terry Fox School Run/Walk/Roll on Friday, Sept. 23rd . Staff will take students for a walk / run / roll as a class at various times throughout the day. The rain date will be Monday, Sept. 26th.   Families are encouraged to make a donation to the Terry Fox direct link provided by your teachers. You are welcome to join us.

Art Garden Fall Workshops

Image
Hello Friends!  Registration for this Fall's ART GARDEN class opens on Monday, September 19 at 9 am ! Classes start the first week of October......just in time for Halloween! Tuesdays - My Cubs gr. 2-3 will do some fun Halloween sculptures, Day of the Dead mixed media and some Fall-themed nature paintings.  Wednesdays - My Foxes will learn how to make Linocut block prints with carving tools and do some real printing. We will make our own printed paper to use in collage and do a fantastic modern style acrylic painting I'm really excited about. Of course, some of it will be Halloween-themed (my favourite Holiday). Click here for the poster for details. To register go to: https://tinyurl.com/ArtGardenFall2022   Note: This year's costs have gone up a bit, sadly the TDSB insurance quadrupled in price and supply costs have also gone way up BUT I don't want that to hold anyone back from enrolling. Talk to me if you need a subsidy. Taya fernfriendsprogram@gmail.com

Orange Shirt Day: September 30th

Image
The calls for Action # 62-65 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission specifically detail the process of reconciliation through education.  Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th.   Orange Shirt Day is an annual event started in 2013 to recognize the legacy of Residential School System for First Nations, Metis and Inuit families and communities. It is a show of support and understanding of the history of the school system that impacts many First Nations, Metis and Inuit people today.  If possible, students and staff are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or articles of clothing/accessories on September 30th . We ask staff and students to wear orange as a sign of support for First Nations, Metis and Inuit People.
